Solar firm looking to fill dozens of positions today

By ,

A growing solar development firm is looking to hire dozens of employees to help it meet consumer demand.

Wall-based Roof Diagnostics Solar is looking to fill about 40 positions at a job fair today at Spring Lake Manor, in Spring Lake. The job fair runs from between 4 and 7 p.m.

"We've kind of hit a tipping point with both sales and installations, where due to the sheer number of projects we have, we need installers, skilled labor and systems designers," said Kelcy Pegler Jr., the company's co-founder.

Pegler said they company also will be hiring sales staff and administrators.

Roof Diagnostics specializes in residential solar installations. Pegler said it already has enough work scheduled to last through the better part of the calendar year.

Solar installer applicants need to have solar industry experience or construction experience, he said. Experienced electricians also are needed.

Pegler said the company has had success holding job fairs in the past in other regions. The most recent job fair drew more than 200 applicants.

"This will be our fourth job fair, and every time we have one, we're really surprised at the level of applicants," he said. "It's incredible, the quality of workforce that's out there."

One reason for the turnout is help from local community colleges, he said.

"We really get great buy-in from all of the local community colleges to help drive the word," he said.

In this case, Brookdale Community College and Ocean County College have provided assistance.

The growth at Roof Diagnostics is notable in part because many solar developers have gone out of business or laid off workers in the past two years as the state's overheated solar market began to contract.

Roof Diagnostics has kept growing by using third-party solar financing firms, such as Sunrun Inc., to provide homeowners with solar installations. In many cases, homeowners pay nothing up front, and purchase the electricity from the systems at a flat rate.

"The industry has seen some considerable consolidation, and I think there are some companies that have gone against the grain," Pegler said. "We're included in that segment of companies, and we're continuing to increase our market share."

Interested applicants should bring a resume, if they have one, and be prepared for a brief job interview with a hiring manager. Applicants should also plan to attend one of two company presentations, at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
