Jersey City Medical Center is poised to become a member of Barnabas Health, under a definitive agreement signed this morning by both parties.
Barnabas Health, the largest nonprofit health care system in the state, will acquire the 316-bed teaching hospital after receiving approvals from state and federal authorities, most likely in the fall of 2013. Both hospitals will explore new avenues for sharing their programs and services.
“Becoming part of Barnabas Health will give our hospital an opportunity to continue to grow our services and better serve the health care needs of this quickly growing community,” said Joseph F. Scott, president and CEO of Jersey City Medical Center. “For a $300 million organization to combine with a $2.6 billion organization, I think this will really shore up Jersey City Medical Center for the future.”
Scott, who has headed up the Jersey City hospital for five years, set out two years ago to find a partner that could help the hospital offer expanded services to the growing Hudson County community.
“The number-one issue was whether culturally the two organizations fit together,” Scott said. “It was clear to us that Barnabas Health and Jersey City Medical Center had the same values.”
Barry H. Ostrowsky, president and CEO of Barnabas Health, is excited that Barnabas will be making an entrance into Hudson County.
“What attracted Barnabas to Jersey City was the hospital's commitment to the community,” he said. “In today's world, providing all the services necessary for the community requires more and more resources, and those resources are scarce. If we take the resources of both organizations and put them together, it will enhance patient care and accessibility and help our ever-shrinking resources go farther.”
Scott will stay on in his position, and said he doesn't anticipate any layoffs or major changes at this time.
“The staff is revved up to be a part of the Barnabas Health System and to provide a much higher level of service to the community,” he said.
Barnabas Health is one of the largest nonprofit health care delivery systems in the nation, caring for more than 2 million patients each year. Jersey City Medical Center, a part of Liberty Health, is the largest provider of health care services in Hudson County, with more than 18,000 admissions and 80,000 emergency room visits each year.
