Executive Moves: March 25, 2013

Back to TopCommentsPrint

Close Up: Robert Vandenbergh

Position: President and chief operating officer, Lakeland Bank

Key role: Responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the bank's strategic plan; establishing and maintaining the bank's core vision and mission; and ensuring the execution of all operational components through management of the bank's lending, retail, operations, marketing and project management business units.

Goals: To provide sustained positive returns for shareholders, excellent service and value-added products for customers, and career advancement for all our team members while actively supporting the communities we serve.

Previous jobs: Prior to starting a banking career in 1982, I worked for Pathmark while attending college in the evenings to complete my degree.

Key strengths: Having worked my way up from entry level to executive management, I can appreciate the contributions of our team members throughout the organization.

Career high: Leading the team that brought a local community bank from the brink of closure to a stable and solid organization. As a result of the strategic initiatives the team implemented to turn the bank around, the institution was able to become a part of the Lakeland Bank organization.

Next: Continue to grow the bank in a balanced manner by keeping customers at the forefront of everything we do, and continue to develop strategic partnerships with other community banks to expand our presence throughout New Jersey.

Challenges: Staying focused on the big picture with an eye toward the future during difficult economic and regulatory times.

After hours: Time demands are difficult now, but I strongly commit to quality time with my supportive wife and family. I also enjoy going to the gym — you need to invest in yourself— and, someday, I hope to get back to improving my golf game.
