Monmouth taps Lehigh business dean as new president

By ,

Monmouth University will have its first new president in 10 years beginning Aug. 1, when Paul R. Brown, currently the dean of the College of Business and Economics at Lehigh University, takes the reins as Paul G. Gaffney II retires.

Brown said he is looking forward to building on the successes that Gaffney put in place.

“I’ve had a wonderful experience at Lehigh and I’m thrilled to be making the move to Monmouth and taking the university to its next level,” he said. “One thing that really appeals to me is the real array of graduate and undergraduate programs there.”

Brown graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Franklin & Marshall College, in Lancaster, Pa., receiving a bachelor’s degree. He earned a doctorate in philosophy and a master’s degree in professional accountancy from the University of Texas at Austin.

Since taking his current position at Lehigh in 2007, Brown adopted a new strategic plan and saw high levels of enrollment in graduate and undergraduate programs. He also implemented major leadership changes and raised more than $40 million in unrestricted funds and toward hiring new faculty.

“We hired at literally historic rates, and I’m so proud of the people we brought in,” Brown said. “The faculty is the lifeline of any university.”

In the fall, Brown’s daughter Emma will begin her freshman year at Franklin & Marshall.

“We joke about it, that she’s going off to college and I’m also going off to college,” he said.
