Soup giant cuts back on Mexican work force, expands distribution agreements

Camden-based Campbell Soup Co. announced Thursday it has entered into agreements with Mexico-based fruit juices producer Grupo Jumex and prepared foods supplier Conservas La Costeņa to expand its manufacturing and distribution capabilities throughout the Mexican market for its beverages, soups, broths and sauces.

As a result of the agreements, Campbell will close its plant in Villagrán, Mexico, and lay off approximately 260 of its 330 workers, though it plans to retain approximately 70 positions in research, sales, supply chain, marketing and general management.
