Each week in Face Time, NJBIZ editors approximate Chris Christie's mood and facial expressions based on the news.
FACE TIME: TIME-HONORED
He was on five morning news show after his annual speech. The same day, he landed on Time's cover, labeled "the boss" and "master of disaster." Those types of honors only seem to happen to presidents, rock stars and, of course, Christie.
WINNERS/LOSERS
Hunts Point market – WINNER
The Bronx produce co-op being wooed by two states voted last week to reject an offer by New York City. New Jersey is still in the hunt, so the market can continue setting its own deal terms and trying to nab even more incentives.
Seastreak – LOSER
Scores were injured when one of its morning ferries from Atlantic Highlands rammed into a lower Manhattan dock at a high speed. Media outlets noted the vessel had had a record of other collisions while docking. Expect the riders' lawyers to notice that too.
Ginjer – WINNER
A bunch of dressed-up adults in a fancy room stared at her while the most powerful guy in the state gushed about her during a big speech. As the many cameras captured it all, Ms. Doherty handled the attention with a grace remarkable for anyone, much less a 9-year-old.
Stephen M. Sweeney – LOSER
Let's hope the Senate President didn't play the lottery last week, given his poor luck of slipping up by saying Christie was lucky that Sandy struck. Sweeney quickly apologized for the insensitive remark, but still suffered a couple days of backlash.
Belmar – WINNER
The day after a Sandy-focused speech, Christie grabbed media attention for the Shore town by attending an event about rebuilding its boardwalk. Environmentalists also cheered the plans, noting the type of wood used would help protect rain forests world-wide.
Christopher Angelo – LOSER
He wanted to be patriotic, but was arrested after climbing the Jet Star rollercoaster with a flag. Misplaced intentions, perhaps. But is there any downside to the nation seeing, yet again, the iconic image of the Seaside Heights ride partially submerged in the ocean, topped with a U.S. flag?
