Pascack Valley Hospital rescue NJBIZ at 25: Best Projects

It closed in 2007 as a result of a four-story addition that saddled the hospital with $80 million in debt, on top of its already hefty operating losses. But Hackensack University Medical Center almost immediately took interest in reopening it, even though the prospect faced fierce opposition from Valley and Englewood hospitals, which claimed the county was overbedded. After a drag-down brawl that lasted years, Hackensack and its for-profit partner, LHP Hospital Group, got the state's blessing to reopen the building as Hackensack University Medical Center North at Pascack Valley, which is expected to welcome its first patients in 2013.
