Newton Medical Center contracts with emergency care providers

By ,

In health care, the emergency department is the gateway to the rest of a hospital's services. Newton Medical Center has joined its sister hospitals in the Atlantic Health System by bringing on Emergency Medical Associates to staff its emergency department.

Emergency Medical Associates is based in Parsippany, and staffs emergency departments and ambulatory care centers. It is physician owned, and employs nearly 400 doctors in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.

"As a community-based hospital, Newton Medical Center has a very busy emergency department, with almost 30,000 visits annually," hospital President Tom Senker said in an e-mail. "EMA was selected to provide physician services for the department through a competitive process."

According to the announcement, EMA has had a relationship with Atlantic Health for more than 30 years, staffing both Overlook Medical Center and Morristown Medical Center.

Dr. David Stuhlmiller has been named the medical director of Newton's emergency department. In a statement, Stuhlmiller said Newton "is known for providing the best emergency medical care in the region. The partnership between Emergency Medical Associates and the medical center will only enhance that reputation."

Senker said the hospital "will have specific physicians dedicated to NMC," though it also will enjoy access to broader resources available across the EMA system.

EMA, in addition to staffing emergency departments, also offers a suite of consulting tools to streamline emergency procedures and decrease wait times for patients. According to the company, it helped Jersey City Medical Center reduce arrival-to-provider times from 50 minutes to 27 minutes over the course of two years. This resulted in a 6 percent increase in emergency department volume, and roughly $1.2 million in additional revenue.
