A group of health care and business advocates announced in Trenton today the launch of a new wellness campaign directed at employers.

The Workplace Wellness Campaign is a spinoff of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, both facilitated by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute.

“In the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, we made mayors ‘champions’ of community health. We hope to do the same for corporate leaders with the Workplace Wellness Campaign,” said David Knowlton, CEO of NJHCQI, in the announcement.

Through the campaign’s website, employers can sign a wellness pledge and receive tips and evidence-based programs for wellness programs in their office, no matter the size or type of company.

“Health care costs are having an enormous negative impact on New Jersey companies, both large and small,” said Phil Kirschner, president of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. “What makes this program so great is that it will help small businesses that may not have the resources to implement wellness programs by themselves.”

NJHCQI has partnered with NJBIA and the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce to launch the campaign, using a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

“A recent study published just this month by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans found that employers who actually measured their workplace wellness efforts showed a three-to-one return on their investment,” said Tom Bracken, president and CEO of the state chamber of commerce. “I do not know many in the business world who would turn away that kind of ROI.”

The campaign will focus on four areas of wellness: fitness, nutrition, chronic diseases and community. All of the suggestions and tools offered by the campaign are considered best practices for the corporate community. Its website, where employers can sign the pledge, is www.workplacewellnesscampaign.org.
