The governor gets a lot of press for the way he treats his enemies. He wanted the bat taken out on Loretta Weinberg, he termed Reed Gusciora “numbnuts,” he said public school students have become “drug mules” for the teachers union. Come to think of it, someone really needs to start a “$#*! My Governor Says” YouTube channel.

But what’s far more intriguing, in a way that “The Sopranos” is more intriguing than “Jersey Shore,” is how Chris Christie treats his friends.

The Associated Press has an item today about the rapid appointments awarded to Bruce Harris and Phillip Kwon after each was rejected as Supreme Court nominees. Then there was last week’s announcement that Caren Franzini’s replacement at the Economic Development Authority would be Michele Brown, whom the governor called a friend; she also previously got a loan from Christie.

Far be it from me to suggest these appointments — Harris to the Turnpike Authority, Kwon to the Port Authority — aren’t thoroughly vetted and highly qualified. For all I know, Kwon is the one guy who can cut the Gordian knot that is the Port Authority (and if not, at least he has a few Christie pals sitting on the board of commissioners to help him out). But in terms of image, it sure looks like something less than genuine is going on when Christie goes to these kinds of lengths to get work for Harris and Kwon — and he’s got to know that’s the case, with reporters asking him about it at pressers.

It ought to make the next round of appointments interesting to a lot of people, though — and to be fair, that’s not the kind of thing you can say every day.
