Going paperless can boost an office's efficiency, but it can also bring potential pitfalls.
In many cases, though, a bit of proactive organization can help avoid headaches down the road.
Carol Schlein, president of Law Office Systems Inc., in Montclair, said law firms need to take security seriously.
"One (important thing) is having a password policy and having real passwords that not everybody knows everybody else's," she said.
Schlein also said firms should advise their employees to log off their computers at night, to make it more difficult for visitors, such as cleaning crews, to access their computers.
Daniel M. Krainin, a principal at Beveridge & Diamond P.C., said firms also need to put thought into how they organize and name their electronic files.
"If you don't know where to find (a needed file), you may end up wasting more time and more resources, and you may end up printing things multiple times," he said.
