It sure was hot this past week, but while most people found solace in a swimming pool or air conditioning, "most people" are not Chris Christie.
If you missed the video of the governor acting like a petulant prepubescent during the heat wave, here's the footage captured by TMZ. (Remember when TMZ only broke stories about Californians getting arrested or dying? Really makes me nostalgic.)
There's so much wrong with this picture that it's tough to know where to start, but I'll give it a try:
1. If you're taking your family on a Shore vacation, why on Earth would you go to Seaside? If you're just nostalgic for the smell of body spray and hair gel, just wander down aisle two in your local Walgreens.
2. The carefully scripted flipping out on legislators for YouTube, while not a good long-term strategy for leadership, is amusing. Who likes legislators? Doing so to constituents on the boardwalk, though, undoes the image of an executive who can use a sharp tongue to accomplish his agenda, and instead makes him seem to possess as much sanity as Caligula.
I mean, what does Christie do for an encore? Jump around on Oprah Winfrey's couch?
But not only are antics like this sowing discord among voters, according to this week's Grapevine column, the state GOP is growing disenchanted with Christie, saying his pursuit of a tax cut at all costs — including the Christie Whitman-style borrowing scheme he's pushed — to endear himself to a national audience is destructive to the state. But the flip side to that same story — they're terrified he'll leave for Washington, because he's able to connect so well with voters. Makes sense, when you consider Republicans and the common man share as many interests as Tiger Woods and the Catholic church.
For all the complaining New Jerseyans do over our depiction on "Jersey Shore" and "The Sopranos," we all deserve it for cheering for the newest outburst, the successor to "numbnuts," the most creative YouTube insults. If Christie finds himself unable to accomplish his pro-business agenda as a result of voter turnoff, it's a big loss for the state at a time it can ill afford one.
I'm even more irreverent on Twitter @joe_arney.
