Newark's Central Ward has another supermarket; something which hasn't happened in over 20 years.

The Food Depot Supermarket opened in late-February and is located along First Street.

The New Jersey Food Marketing Task Force is calling for financing supermarkets in "food deserts," which are urban and rural undeserved locations. Andrew Kitchenman's article discusses the issues of opening supermarkets in these areas and spoke with task force members and those in the supermarket industry on the progress being made.
