Bill would give Amazon.com temporary sales tax break

By Andrew Kitchenman

A bill has been introduced in the state Assembly that would provide a temporary deferral of sales tax collection for Amazon.com.

The measure, A-2608, depends on Amazon.com making investments in the state and creating jobs.

The bill is sponsored by Assemblymen Albert Countinho (D-Newark), Vincent Prieto (D-Secaucus), Troy Singleton (D-Delran) and Majority Leader Louis D. Greenwald (D-Voorhees).

Coutinho said the measure would benefit the state by bringing jobs and allowing the state to collect sales taxes in the future. Amazon has reportedly been seeking a 22-month exemption from collecting sales taxes, while it has proposed bringing 1,500 jobs to two distribution centers in the state.

A companion bill has not been introduced in the Senate yet, and the text of the Assembly bill wasn't available at noon on Tuesday.
