Winners & Losers

Super Bowl edition

By NJBIZ Staff

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. (David J. Phillip/AP)

John Mara and Steve Tisch – WINNER
Their Giants team won fewer games than last year's team, which didn't make the playoffs, but Big Blue got hot when it mattered — the team hasn't lost since Dec. 18 — and there's a windfall of merchandise sales due to the owners.

New York Jets – LOSER
Looking for Jets hats, T-shirts, jerseys? Back of the store. Until Woody's team gets it done, the revenue and respect headed to the Giants won't wear green and white. And Rex Ryan captured the preseason attention with his mouth, but on the field, had no answer for his quiet counterpart.

Eli Manning – WINNER
Don't let that goofy aw-shucks expression fool you: He's among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL and is in line for some sponsorship megabucks after delivering a second Super Bowl title — and game MVP honor — to the Meadowlands faithful.

American Dream – LOSER
Last week, the governor, the teams and thousands of fans drove past the Xanadu eyesore on the way to a rally to honor the newly crowned champs. Imagine what might have been if the mall had been open and selling booze, merchandise and the like.

Certified Tourism Ambassador Network – WINNER
This service is expected to train employees for the 2014 game in East Rutherford. One thing everyone agreed on in Indy was the quality of customer service training on display, and the New Jersey/New York delegation wants that to be a priority when its turn comes around.

Atlantic City – LOSER
Were it legal to place bets on sports teams here, the resort city may have had enough money to build a second Revel casino. Notice the state hasn't sent any ex-NBA stars to the U.S. Senate since Bill Bradley.

FACE TIME: TORN

Like any good governor, Christie rode the home team bandwagon hard in the days leading up to the big game, pushing the "Jersey Giants" angle that every lawmaker seems to when the team does well — but you know it had to be eating up the insides of this die-hard Cowboys and Jets fan.
