New features launched in NJBIZ

By Sharon Waters

We have a new folder of photos on our server of Gov. Chris Christie’s face registering a full range of emotions, from elated to four degrees of angry. (Except the latter are labeled with an adjective for angry that I can’t print, and I’m not talking about “perturbed.”) The photos are for “Face Time,” a new feature we are launching today on page 3 of the print edition. Face Time will aim to capture the complicated—and intense—emotional state of our governor during the previous week. Face Time is the brilliant brainchild of Managing Editor Joe St. Arney, who also painstakingly went through every Christie photo we had to fill the photo folder.

Another new feature on page 3 is “Winners/Losers.” That idea we stole from other publications like Politicker NJ, the New Jersey Law Journal, etc. It’s the same concept of summarizing who is up and down that week.

Next to the Grapevine page, we now have “State Street,” which will report the inside scoop on what’s happening in Trenton. The page could have been called “Double L” because it will focus on legislation and lobbyists. It will bring you the back story on who is pushing which bills. Statehouse reporter Andrew Kitchenman is in charge of the page. If you have a State Street tip, send it to Andrew at akitchenman@njbiz.com or (609) 278-1222.

If you’re wondering, “Wait, what about Suite Escape that was on the page next to Grapevine?” don’t worry. We also revamped our Opinion section, bringing it down to one page. The biggest change is we have dropped “Corner Office” and “Letters to the Editor” for one section called “Readers Forum.” When we revamped the Opinion section a few years ago, I was told by a publishing veteran that business journals don’t receive a lot of letters to the editor. He was right. However, New Jersey people are more outspoken than in other states so we were able to fill the spot every week, but it wasn’t always easy. The Readers Forum approach will allow us to publish the strongest content each week. We also dropped the editorial cartoon, expanded the “Quote Marks” section and created a different format for our poll results.

You can see all the changes here, including the photo of a “torn” Christie this week. As always, I welcome your feedback. What do you like? What do you hate? Contact me at swaters@njbiz.com or (732) 246-5702, or post a comment here.
