About 300 people attended PlanSmart NJ's annual awards dinner Wednesday night at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick.

Barry Rabner, president and CEO of Princeton HealthCare System, received the Resource Efficiency Achievement Award for leadership in the development of the University Medical Center at Princeton. The $635 million hospital and campus will include $60 million spent on sustainable features, Rabner said.

"It's sort of a validation that the investment we made was a responsible one," he said. "It's really a great business decision."

David Samson, chairman of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, was honored with the Economic Development Achievement Award for the agency's decision to raise the Bayonne Bridge.

Christopher J. Paladino, president of New Brunswick Development Corp., was recognized with the Regional & Community Planning Achievement Award for Devco's Gateway project.

"It's a down economy and I bet this is one of the biggest projects going in the state right now," said Dennis Marco, a Devco board member.

Avidan Management and Johnson & Johnson won Environmental Achievement Awards for their solar arrays. Josh Avidan, member of Avidan Management, said the award gives the Elizabeth company recognition in the solar and real estate industries.

The Salem County Improvement Authority was honored with an Environmental Achievement Award for its methane gas-to-electricity project. Debby Turner-Fox, authority executive director, said PlanSmart NJ helped the authority understand the value of making investments like the award-winning energy project.

Matthew A. Reilly won the Regional Equity Achievement Award for his leadership in developing affordable housing in Burlington County.

Trenton-based PlanSmart NJ is a nonprofit planning and research organization focused on sound land-use planning and regional cooperation.

"They provide guidance for real estate and land-use decisions," said Timothy J. Touhey, CEO and executive vice president of the New Jersey Builders Association. "They're thoughtful and pretty objective."
