By João-Pierre RuthTSA ordered the devices under its Bottle Liquid Scanner program, which sought the development of handheld scanners for use at airport security checkpoints. Such devices may ease current restrictions on passengers transporting large bottles of liquid.
Smiths said the devices use spectroscopy to determine if the liquids pose a threat. The analysis is compared with results from substances such as explosives, toxins and hazardous chemicals.
Smiths said the scanners will be produced at its Danbury, Conn. plant.
