ImClone CEO earns high honors from BioNJ

John H. Johnson, chief executive of ImClone Systems, has been selected for industry group BioNJ’s next Sol Barer Award, which is considered to be New Jersey’s highest biotech decoration. BioNJ President Debbie Hart said the award recognizes his strengths as an industry leader — especially at ImClone, which has expanded over the years at its Branchburg facility — and as an active supporter and board member of her trade association.

In mid-September, Johnson also was named head of the oncology business unit at Eli Lilly, the Indianapolis, Ind.-based pharmaceutical giant that bought ImClone last October for $6.5 billion. Johnson moved to head ImClone two years ago from Johnson & Johnson, where he was group chairman of its worldwide pharmaceutical business.

BioNJ’s Dr. Sol J. Barer Award for Vision, Innovation and Leadership is named after the chairman and CEO of Celgene Corp., of Summit, a large biotechnology company with a market capitalization of more than $25 billion. Earlier recipients of the award include Sol Barer and Lisa Drakeman, CEO of Princeton’s Genmab.
