Philanthropy is down in this weak economy, but when the
Linde Group, in the Murray Hill section of New Providence, tweaked its employee charitable giving campaign, the result was a significant increase in donations.
For years, Linde, the world’s largest producer of industrial gases, ran a two-week employee fundraising campaign to benefit the United Way of Greater Union County. Last fall, the company decided to open up the campaign, giving employees the choice of contributing to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association as well as the United Way, and raised a record of more than $150,000, said Kenn Flessner, head of supply chain excellence. The company match raised the total to $300,000, whereas in 2007, the company raised $238,000 in combined contributions for United Way.
The 2008 results “are the most we’ve ever raised in a charitable campaign,” Flessner said, even though the two-week campaign took place last October, in the midst of a stock market decline and a corporate restructuring at Linde, which has about 3,000 employees. The corporate giving campaign primarily targets the company’s 600 salaried employees.
Adding two new charities reduced giving to United Way by about 10 percent, but the change also enlisted employees who hadn’t contributed in the past.
Flessner said employees had the opportunity to support organizations that were aligned with their interests; for example, some employees already are involved in cancer walks. “If you design your campaign well, you can continue to support United Way and expand your campaign without impacting your participation with United Way.”
New Jersey’s nonprofits report that the recession is severely affecting operations, according to a new survey released today by the Center for Non-Profits in North Brunswick.
Some 40 percent of respondents expect 2009 funding to decline compared with last year, while 70 percent say demand for their services rose last year — and will continue to rise.
Linda Czipo, executive director, said some nonprofits will close their doors this year, and others will merge to survive. One-third of respondents said their circumstances will be worse a year form now; only 8 percent were pessimistic a year ago.
Coping strategies include cuts in programs and personnel, new collaborations, and new fundraising approaches.
“Nonprofits are taking a hard look at their programs to determine what is absolutely central to their mission, what can be trimmed and where synergies with new partners can be found,” Czipo said. “But the pain of this crisis is widespread, and people are looking to these organizations to provide vital programs and support.”
On April 15, the Center for Nonprofits will host a panel discussion at New Jersey Network in Trenton on how to use technology, media and social networking to reach their audiences and build support.
