Realtor group opposes Obama budget proposal

“This is going to be our primary focus — to get a feel where our congressional delegation stands on this issue, and to explain why this is wrong,” he said.

“While New Jersey enjoys the second-highest household median income in the nation, our taxpayers also bear the heaviest state and local tax burden in the country,” Grasso said. “In a high-cost state like ours, reducing the amount of mortgage interest a family can deduct from their taxes will have a devastating impact on housing recovery efforts.”

Obama’s budget proposal would limit the tax rate for high-income taxpayers to 28 percent for itemized deductions. Though the proposal would apply only to households earning $250,000 or more, prices for all homes would decline as prospective homebuyers lower their purchase offers to factor in the reduced deduction, NJAR said. A drop in prices for the most expensive homes would eventually filter down to lower-priced homes, according to the association.

Grasso called the proposal a “negative message” to homeowners. “Everything Congress has done in the past has been to promote housing in the last six months to a year. Now we’re taking a step back,” he said.

Grasso said a combination of state and national legislative pressures could be disastrous to homeowners in the state.

“We have the state Legislature and the governor talking just yesterday about potential taxes. We don’t know what those taxes may be. We have the governor and Legislature talking about the elimination of property tax rebate programs for all homeowners, except for senior citizens. Adding a change in federal law where you can’t write off some of your interest, it’s going to exasperate the housing situation here,” he said.

Grasso could not state how many local homeowners could be affected by Obama’s plan. Given the high cost of living in the state, he believes the pinch could be widespread. “A working family making more than $250,000 isn’t out of the norm, especially in certain parts of the state,” he said.
