When asked if he wants to be U.S. Treasury secretary or head of the Federal Reserve, Gov. Jon S. Corzine said this morning he can be part of the solution to the nation’s economic ills by working to fix New Jersey’s economy in his current position.

“I like my job. I think I’m part of the solution as I stay governor of New Jersey,” Corzine said on NBC’s “The Today Show” this morning.

Corzine also said he is “a little confused” about how the current Republican administration has handled the national economic bailout. He noted the federal government is investing in the financial institutions without putting any constraints on how the money can be spent. He also criticized the administration of President Bush for not clearly thinking through how the billions of dollars should be spent.

“They’ve never had a clear idea what road they were going” down, Corzine said.

Asked about a possible bailout of the nation’s automakers, Corzine said, “I would come out on the side that we keep an auto industry in the United States.” But he added, “I think we need a reformed auto industry,” noting the importance of creating energy efficiency. “It’s how you put money into the industry that is important.”

On Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) as a possible choice for secretary of State, Corzine said she is a “magnificent person” who would be a “great choice.”
