Pat Russo’s announcement last week that she would step down as chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent by the end of the year speaks more to a failed business strategy than anything else.

The tale of Russo’s rise and fall seems to be about an executive who took a struggling company and tried to save it by slashing head count, instead of reacting to a changed market by taking the company in a new direction.

Russo herself hinted at that last week when she said the company will get “…a fresh and independent perspective” after she steps down along with non-executive Chairman Serge Tchuruk, and board member and former Lucent CEO Henry Schacht.

It’s easier to digest the departure of a prominent leader based on an earnest but incomplete effort than one dictated by alleged immoral behavior like last week’s resignation by Assemblyman Neil Cohen (D-Union).

Before the child pornography allegations against Cohen surfaced, he appeared to be one of the busiest legislators in the state, sponsoring 342 bills this year.

Both Russo and Cohen were high profile and held a lot of promise. But in the end, both were out the door last week—Russo because she was unable to navigate in a rapidly changing industry, while Cohen apparently sunk his own ship.

Either way, failure is painful. But at least Russo can walk away with her head held high.
