By Evelyn LeeThe Garden State lost 9,398 industrial jobs in 2007, almost twice the number of jobs that the state lost in 2006, according to MNI.
MNI's study shows New Jersey's jobs losses reflect those seen across the Mid-Atlantic, with New York losing 3 percent of its industrial employment and Pennsylvania 2.3 percent, according to MNI.
"This is a trend we've seen across the country," says Thomas Dubin,
president of Manufacturers' News. "Even though manufacturing activity is at a record high, industrial employment is declining." He attributed the trend to manufacturing jobs moving out of the country, mergers and consolidations, as well as greater use of automation and technology in manufacturing.
New Jersey is home to 10,551 manufacturers employing 461,158 workers, according to MNI. New Jersey ranks 14th in the nation for number of manufacturing plants and 15th for employment, accounting for 15 percent of the Mid-Atlantic's jobs and 16 percent of the region's manufacturers.
