Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSE: BRL) in Woodcliff Lake says its subsidiary, Barr Laboratories Inc., has received approval for its abbreviated new drug submission from the Therapeutic Products Directorate of Health Canada for Portia, a generic equivalent of Min-Ovral tablets. Min-Ovral is an oral contraceptive for women made by Wyeth Laboratories.

Barr will manufacture Portia and Apotex Inc. will market the product in Canada. Barr will receive a royalty on Canadian sales. Portia has been available since 2002 in the United States, where it is approved as a generic version of Nordette, an oral contraceptive marketed by Duramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. Nordette has the same active ingredients as Min-Ovral, levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

Shares of Barr were down $1.42 to $50.17 in early afternoon trading.
