At Stellar Academy, success is counted
one child at a time.
>>>The early learning center for preschool
children opened in 2004 as a
joint project pioneered by a pair of
twin sisters.
>>>The academy’s curriculum was
shaped by Margaret Buley, who
earned a doctorate in education after
studying at Harvard, Princeton and
Rutgers universities.
>>>Mary Matthews, with three decades
of management experience under her
belt, provided the business expertise.
>>>“For us, there was no better place
to start a business than New Jersey,”
says Matthews, Stellar’s chief executive
officer. “Being born and raised in
New Jersey, we understood the wonderful
demographics of our state and
the opportunities this afforded us.
New Jersey is home to many professional
moms and dads looking for
the very best for their children.”
>>>Stellar enrolls 200 children under 6
years old. They enjoy a curriculum and
an environment designed to maximize
learning and build a foundation for
future achievement.

In addition to helping
children, Matthews and Buley are
seeking to create a better environment
for teachers and caregivers by
respecting them as professionals.
Consequently, staff turnover is low,
they say.
>>>The sisters have also pitched in to
improve early learning in other countries.
After a trip to the Dominican
Republic, Matthews and Buley gathered
up puzzles, games and supplies
to donate to a program designed to
shore up early learning in that
Caribbean country.
