In 1997, when the founders of
Compensation Solutions went out
looking for their first corporate clients,
they faced an unusual challenge.
>>>Few companies had ever heard of
the company’s type of business, a professional
employer organization,
which acts as a third-party “coemployer”
for its clients. Thus, from
the start, the growth of Compensation
Solutions has depended on education
as much as salesmanship.
>>>Compensation Solutions also had
to overcome initial skepticism of its
industry after several earlier companies
in the field had been irresponsible
with client money.
>>>“We weren’t sure our industry
would survive,” said Thomas J. Cioffe,
president and chief executive officer
of Compensation Solutions, a familyowned
business he started with his
brother-in-law, Stu Yannalfo.
>>>To generate business and build
trust, the company tapped attorneys,
accountants and other recognized
business advisers for referrals. As word
of mouth spread, the company grew.

Today, Compensation Solution
has nearly 6,000 co-employees at 400
sites in more than 30 states. To
ensure quality service, the company
blends technology and a hands-on
approach. That includes account
executives who act as liaisons
between client companies and
Compensation Solutions.
>>>Cioffe, meanwhile, has been
active in industry groups and public
policy issues. For instance, as president
of the New Jersey chapter for the
National Association of Professional
Organizations, he served on the
Governor’s Healthcare Council,
which was formed to study skyrocketing
health care costs for small businesses
and the uninsured.
